Kona WINTER Mash-Up 2009 Event Report:

ImageOver 400 competitors made their way to the 3rd Kona Mash-Up and joined the relaxed atmosphere mixed in with rather wet weather conditions on the trails surrounding the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in Afan Forest. The event was contrary to the sun spoiled June event exposed to almost horizontal rain which tested man and machine. However it did not have an impact on the riders joining the fun and testing their ability and the trails around the Mountain Bike Centre.

The Kona Mash-Up used the Whites Level and the July Trail (beginning and end of the Skyline trail) to create two courses. The Whites Level course was used by the technical category who had the chance to spend quite a few hours doing re-runs of the action packed Black Run as well as chill out and exchange tactics at the event village at the top of Windy Point (top of the climb). The endurance riders had more distance to cover and were also timed on a climb rather than just the single track and DH sections.

The rather challenging weather conditions made chilling out at the top of the mountain less enjoyable but the extensive easy-up village equipped with heaters and cold and hot drinks as well as a small Drop Off Café setup gave riders the chance to gather their strength as well as to discuss tactics before heading out to do the next timed section. The Technical and the Enduro category saw lots of leading riders returning and in particular Rowan Sorrell from Orange / Royal repeating last year’s success. We also saw Ryan Bevis returning who after a 3rd position in the Endurance category in the June event entered the technical category to finish in a very impressive 4th position – just 44 seconds off the pace.

ImageThe Kona Mash-Up set out to bring riders from different ‘riding backgrounds’ together and give them the chance to compete in the same event and even in certain sections against each other and all that with one of the most relaxed atmospheres you can imagine at a mountain bike event.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy the social side of the relaxed rides between the highly competitive timed runs, and it gave everyone the chance for some friendly banter and chat!

A big thanks goes out to Kona Bikes and Skyline Cycles for making this event happen and for supporting us all the way. We would also like to thank MBUK, Torq, Muc Off, The DropOff Café, the Forest Commission and the Glyncorrwg Ponds and Mountain Bike Centre.

The Kona Mash-Up Event Report:

ImageOver 400 competitors made their way to the 2nd Kona Mash-Up and joined the relaxed atmosphere on the trails surrounding the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in Afan Forest. The event was blessed with superb sunshine and dry weather, which all added to the festival atmosphere out on the hillside. This relaxed style race day was the first ever of its kind, with a format of 6 different timed sections, and chill-outs between each run.

The incredible weather conditions, the superb conditions out on the trail and last but not least the rather lively evening party made for a great days racing. The Technical and the Enduro category saw lots of leading riders returning and in particular Rob Cooksley from Bad Ass Bikes and Rosa Martin put once more their stamp on the event by repeating last years success. But we also saw lots of new faces including World DH champion Tracy Moseley.

Once racing came to an end the DropOff café put out a fantastic buffet and the day was wrapped up with a great party.
