Kona Mash-Up - The Concept

What is the Kona Mash-Up all about?

So let’s try this again. The Kona Mash-Up, powered by Mercedes-Benz Vito Sport is born out of the idea that majority of events in the UK are purely targeting one ‘kind of rider’. There are marathon events for the endurance specialist, XC races for the racing whippets out there and Downhill events for the adrenaline junkies. But there is not really one event that brings all these groups together. The Kona Mash-Up is our attempt to do exactly that.

Most trail centers in the UK are based on courses that offer a variety of sections. There are single trail climbs, mixed in with forest road sections, followed by flowing single tracks and finished off with more technical down hill sections. These trails are perfect for a broad range of riders – some of them more into the over all experience some of them primarily looking for the speed fix on the more technical descending sections. We thought we would create something for all riders out there.

NEW FOR 2010
Besides adding the new and exciting location of Glentress to the Mash-Up line-up we are also introducing some further changes.

Due to the different setup at the two venues and our intention to ‘mash’ things up a bit we will have a slightly different way of running the event in Glentress as the regular Mash-Up riders are used to from our events in Glyncorrwyg.

How it works in at the Glyncorrwyg events in Wales

skylineEach rider enters a category. The choices are ENDURO or TECHNICAL.

ENDURO: You will ride a mixture of downhill, trail riding and cross-country (total riding distance of approx. 40km). You will be timed on the parts of the climbs, single-track and downhill sections at both locations. You will be timed on all together 5 sections not including the live timed DH run.

TECHNICAL: You will ride sections of the courses but your time will only be taken on particular single track and the downhill sections.  You will still ride (or push!) up the climbs, but that time will not be included in your result, so you can take your time! You will be timed on three sections including the live timed DH run.

How it works in at the Glentress event in Scotland

GlentressWe don’t have two categories here we only have ONE. Due to the high density of quality events and the sheer endless ways of linking them up we will only have one category for everybody in Glentress. We will still run a broad selection of timed downhill and flowy singletrack sections but also throw in a timed climb for the riders who want to show off climbing skills. The trails are put together so that riding certain sections multiple times is very straight forward. So if you messed up your 1st run or simply think that you can do better after a couple of training runs then simply go back to the start and give it another go. Riders will be timed on six sections plus the timed run if they want to be included in this stand alone stage. Please note that the timed climb will not be included in the over-all timing which determines the over-all positioning.

Inter category racing / prizes
At the Glentress event everybody riders against everybody as there are no categories. The timed climb is kept as a separate stage/prize which does not go into the overall timing.

At the event in Glyncorrwyg however this is a little different. Even when you primarily ride or race against other riders in your category on some of the individual sections you race against everyone. So for example you might be in the ENDURO category as you enjoy the whole package the trails have to offer but you think of yourself as a speed demon on the swoopy singletrack sections. You can prove yourself against all the other riders (no matter what category) on the some of the technical sections. So you might end up being half way down the field in you category but you are 3rd on the 1st technical singletrack section only being beaten by two down hill specialists. Wouldn’t that be fun…in particular if you ride a ridged bike.

So there is more than one reason to get involved. Try to get a good result over all but also race the favourites or your mate on the timed sections out there. We will have prizes down to position 3 on the over all category results as well as down to position 3 on the individual stages.

If still not clear how this works please drop us an email to:info@mtbtransuk.co.uk so that we can explain it a bit better and improve this website where it needs improving.

Race time
The timing will be open from 9am till 5pm and till 4pm at the December event. So you have 8 hours to tackle the various timed sections. There is an open start, which means that you can start whenever you like as long as it is after 9am and before 1pm. This event does not have a mass start.

Please note that the timing on the July Trail section at the December round will be only open from 9am – 1pm. So if you are competing in the endurance category we strongly advice to rider the July part of the course first.

We do reserve the right to adjust the start and finish time due to weather and light conditions.

Darkness - Lights
At the December round of the Kona Mash-Up the last few hours of timing might fall into darkness. If you are intending to ride when darkness is setting in it is your responsibility to have sufficient lighting. We reserve the right to refuse you carrying on if we feel that you don’t have sufficient lighting on board. There is no need for you to bring any lights as long as you make sure that you finish your ride before darkness sets in.

Entry restrictions
You don’t need any licence or be part of a club. You need to be at least 16 years old though and in good physical health. Even though this event is not based on head down and hammer racing for hours on end, it is still a tough course therefore you and for your bike need to be in perfect working order. Please make sure that you have the right protection gear (helmet is a must – no exception) in particular if you are riding in the TECHNICAL section at the Glyncorrwyg event. We strongly recommend extra protection for this category.

Finishing parties
As all good things will come to an end – so will the Kona Mash-Ups. But don’t worry we will finish in a blast at the finishing parties. We will have the prize presentation as part of the finishing party (approx. 7pm) accompanied by some tunes and some food and drinks from the bar.

Timing Chip:
Every rider will receive a timing chip, which has to be mounted on the bike/number board or the ankle of the rider (please see instructions at the signing on desk). It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure the chip is properly mounted. If done incorrectly or not done at all, no time can be given at the timed stages. If uncertain please ask a member of staff. The timing chip has to be securely fitted on the competitor’s bike or ankle and cannot be changed at any stage in the event. Every rider will have to pay a deposit for the timing chip at the signing on, which will be refunded upon return of the chip at the end of the Kona Mash-Up.
